Arbor Day Program

We had our Arbor Day Program in the schools on March 17th & 18th, 2022. The Arkansas Forestry Division met us at the schools to teach the kids about Arbor Day and how to plant the pine trees they got to take home. Arbor Day is a day to encourage people to plant and care for trees. The story began in 1855 when J. Sterling Morton and his wife moved to Nebraska City. They moved to a farm that had no trees. The Morton's began to plant trees and shrubs because they missed the forests and vegetation from back home. Trees play a vital role in our day to day life as the Morton's and other settlers learned. In Arkansas Arbor Day is the 3rd Monday of March.

Outdoor Classroom

The Rich Mountain Conservation District (RMCD) held a tree planting day on March 16th, 2021 at the Cossatot River School Outdoor Classroom.  Personnel from the RMCD, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Arkansas Forestry Division discussed the importance of trees and forestry in Arkansas and demonstrated how to properly plant a tree seedling.
Approximately 70 students from the Cossatot River High School agriculture classes planted approximately 1,000 pine seedlings on about 2 acres of land at the Outdoor Classroom.  Both Loblolly Pine and Shortleaf pine were planted.
The Cossatot River School Outdoor Classroom is a collaborative effort between the school, Rich Mountain Conservation District, and the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission to develop an area for students to learn about nature, conservation, and agriculture.  The outdoor classroom includes a forestry demonstration area to show different forest management systems and allow students hands on experiences in forestry.
RMCD would like to give thanks to the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Arkansas Forestry Division, Scott Morgan and Monte Fain of Cossatot River High School, and especially Danny Powell and the US Forest Service for providing the pine seedlings.
